Adventure seekers have been exploring the vast sand dunes around the city of Muscat, Oman for years. Dune safari packages are a popular way to explore outside the city.

Visitors normally arrive in Muscat, and are immediately greeted by some amazing examples of Middle Eastern architecture, food, and hospitality. Trekking out into the dunes is a trip that often begins early in the morning, before the midday hours, which can boast some pretty high temperatures. In certain seasons it is actually recommended that those wishing to take photographs buy disposable cameras, because the intense heat can damage professional ones.

A Rough and Tumble Ride Through the Wadis

Set to go, a typical journey will take you up and over the dunes, and to several wadis, or dried-out riverbeds. Riding in a 4x4 vehicle, with an experienced dune driver, doesn’t make the trip through the dunes any less exciting. At some points the vehicle may ride passes at an angle of 75 degrees, leaving you hanging by your seatbelts. Up and over, down and around, drivers take pathways that they have been using for years, while passengers stare in disbelief; no signs or visible landmarks point the way. It is a road that is learned by these guides from infancy, deeply ingrained into their minds and hearts.

The wadis are an amazing sight. These dried out lakes and riverbeds are surrounded by interesting natural rock structures, carved out by the water and sand erosion over many centuries. Some, like the Wadi Shab, are now massive valleys, full of caves, rock formations, greenery and water. For those who want to hike the full 4 km of this wadi additional hiking equipment is necessary. At the Bani Khalid you can take a swim, although the water isn’t very deep. Many enjoy the different tropical oases that are found throughout the barren dunes, such as the Nakhl oasis. The famous warm springs in Thowarah are also a popular stop for desert safaris. You will also see a number of impressive forts constructed over time for the protection of areas, peoples, and treasures.

A Breathtaking End to an Amazing Ride

The entrance to the Jebel Akhdar fort passes on your right as you head up the Al Jabal al Akhdar mountain, the most impressive mountain of Oman, set in the Hajar Mountains. High in the range the area is full of fruit trees, and the smell of cherry, peach, pomegranate, saffron and garlic permeate the air. On the Saiq plateau you will find one of the most amazing rose gardens, famed for its production of rose water and perfume. From here the dry dessert seems a million miles and a hundred worlds away, but the charm of the city of Muscat is just down the mountain and across the dune.
